Criminal justice responses come in the form of punishment that is meted out for wrongdoing against common interests, whereas civil justice applies to the resolution of conflicts between members as parties of equal status. Typical forms of punishment that associational criminal structures use include fines, temporary suspension of membership, expulsion, humiliation, corporal punishment, and death (Barker, 2007: 92–93; Chu, 2000: 34; Paoli, 2003: 128–129).
