The second major sign of peritonitis is tenderness. Tenderness is most marked in the region of the primary pathology (Fig. 17), but as the process extends to other parts of the peritoneal cavity, the tenderness becomes more widespread. Progression and extension of tenderness are suggestive of peritonitis. Tenderness is most marked if the inflammation is close to the area palpated (Fig. 18).
